On this website, I'd like to share with you my journey and process for embracing minimalism, tiny houses, permaculture, and how I'm learning to lead a more simple, sustainable, conscious & loving existence.
My Tiny Story
Growing up in a double wide mobile home without much money or extras, I yearned as a child for a "real house" and a comfortable lifestyle. Between the ages of 16-28, I moved 11 times, from apartments, to dorm rooms, to duplexes. Everything was temporary and never felt like home. Around the age of 22 I discovered yoga and meditation which led me to a feeling of being 'at home' in my body, and utilizing those simple breath and movement practices that I fell in love with each day. Eventually, this led me to start creating yoga stories and teaching children in my Montessori classroom and then teaching families and adults as well.
At age 26 I got married and a few years later we moved into a 1726 sq. foot home in southeast Austin, Texas. It was everything I thought I wanted and I painted every room a different color just because I could! I filled up the rooms with things I barely looked at, things I didn't really need. I was home at last - or so I thought. I accumulated more and more things, started more and more projects, and the whole time I smoked so much marijuana and drank so much that I stopped being myself and lost my internal connection to my highest self. Then, after a 14-year relationship, I lost my marriage, and then my dogs, and eventually my house. I was so miserable. After my divorce, I knew I needed some drastic changes. I got sober and I started selling things off one by one. As I did, I felt more and more freedom. Before, when I had everything I thought I wanted, my life felt so heavy, like the weight of the world rested on my shoulders. Then, after getting rid of 90% of my stuff and renting out the house, I drove away from Austin on my first cross-country adventure and I had never felt so light and free before.
With just enough money and just enough faith, I slowly made my way through 25 states that summer, couchsurfing, camping, staying in hostels and sometimes even sleeping in my car. I slept on couches and guest rooms in small apartments and big empty houses of people I met on couchsurfing.com or friends of friends from facebook. I stayed on couches, beds and floors of friends houses. I tent camped in national parks, slept on beaches and even stayed in an earthship one night. It was an incredible adventure! And I was hooked on my next addiction - travel.
Over the 7 years since I took that first trip, I started three businesses, (one I moved away from, two are still going part-time), I traveled to 10 more countries, I traveled across the U.S. 5 more times, and attended dozens of yoga festivals. I've had the honor of caring for my father as he died of brain cancer. I become an aunt to a beautiful 4 year old niece and a 1 year old nephew. I've taught yoga and creative movement to thousands of children and adults. My tiny yogini life has been full of love and laughter and magic.
In this blog, I would like to share stories about my travel, and more on what drew me to love living tiny. I also am passionate about creating a more sustainable way of living for myself, reducing my carbon footprint, eating a whole-foods plant-based diet, and helping and educating others on how to do so as well. Sometimes the journey is swift and sometimes it is a long winding road, but regardless it's about the journey and not the destination!
